About Itadakimasu!

An exploration of gender representation in magical girl anime through food.

Itadakimasu is an participatory art piece that highlights the sexualization of young girls in magical girl anime. By eating the dessert sushi, one strips away representations of power, only to find the typical issues of gender representation remaining.
The experience is a metaphor that beneath the subgenre's glamour and bright colors, problematic objectification of the female remains - even in children's media. The piece utilizes digital fabrication methods such as 3D printing and laser engraving as storytelling mechanisms.
